Antique Evening Bags For Proms And All Special Occasions Are Very Popular

By Julie Wild

In modern society no well dressed woman would dream to venture outdoors without a handbag or purse that perfectly matches her shoes and the rest of her attire. Even men have resurrected an antiquated fashion and are once again toting a bag. When shopping for a special outfit some women start with a favorite handbag and buy clothes and shoes to match. Others prefer buying the dress first and then do the accessorizing. However regardless of how one goes about it buying evening bags for proms and all special occasions is great fun.

A style, shape, color and size of a handbag is vital when choosing for a special occasion. Smaller purses are considered evening accessories and large toting handbags are mainly used with casual wear. Nowadays people have many various places to shop for their handbag purchases. They can search through local specialty or clothing stores or go online and view the many worldwide products for sale.

Up to the end of the 1800s women only used small pouches made from a variety of materials such as velvet, silk or soft leather. Many were elaborately embroidered or beaded to match their dresses. All they were required to carry about with them was a hanky and some small change. When people spoke of a handbag in those days they were actually referring to hand luggage for a gentleman.

From the turn of the 20th century women started using cosmetics and they required large receptacles. The handbag as we know it today came into being and has since become a major fashion accessory. The British refer to these bags as handbags and their money wallets as purses. Americans use the term purse or handbag when speaking of these handbags.

During and immediately after World War II with strict rationing handbags were made from raffia or crocheted from various yarns. These were commercially manufactured or homemade. Many of the delightful special occasion purses one sees today are made by crafters and are sought after.

Prom night is a huge event and finding the right purse to match the outfit could take time. If one finds a treasure at either a market stall or used clothing store they may just have found the wow factor for their outfit. Granny's old linen chest should not be ignored either as there could be some delightful old handbags in it.

Evening bags for proms and all special occasions have become big business and all the great designer clothing houses are annually launching their own ranges. Many clothing designer houses do handbags as well which are particularly popular and their famous trademark logos are easily recognized. These are made to last and people often find almost new handbags in charity shops.
