The big hitter of London Fashion Week is always Christopher Bailey's Burberry show in the Kensington Garden tent, and this season was no different attracting more than 1,500 guests including a star-studded front row of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Clemence Posey, Kate Bosworth, Alexa Chung, and William. This wasn't just about showing the collection, which went back to the brand's Town and Field roots with lots of tweed, but it also showed off the brands technology prowess by streaming the show live not only via its website but also to digital billboards in airports, news networks, and train stations as well as in their own stores globally, including for the first time at London's Liverpool Street station, Heathrow Terminal 5, and on giant LED screens on the facade of Burberry Beijing.
The lack of pretence made it a show of desirable separates that without doubt will satisfy Burberry's core customer and appeal to new customers the company hopes to reach with its ferocious global networking campaign. What struck odd was the heavy weighted feeling of the collection, with knitwear and outerwear shown as the most predominant looks. Surely a catwalk collection is about creating a mood, and as romantic as it was, with Jeff Beck singing "I put a spell on you" over the speakers, a lighter touch would not have gone amiss.
