The Cambridge Satchel Company History

By Candice Miller

The Cambridge Satchel Company was created in 2008 as a means for Julie Dean to pay for her daughter's education. She had been reading the Harry Potter series and became enchanted with satchels. She created this business so she could work from home and still be around her daughter.

Each of the satchel bags Julie came across were cheaply made and were not like the simple classics. Julie Dean wanted to produce a classic satchel bagsfor school children that were structured, simple and great quality. Together with her mum, Freda Thomas, Julie Dean began making handmade satchel bags on her kitchen table.

Selling 3 bags a week at first in 2008, Julie and Freda have now reached 1,500 sales per week globally. The Cambridge Satchel Company is now an 8 million pound company, as they are based in Britain. Although their target market was school children at first, young online shoppers with a keen sense for fashion are the major purchasers for this emerging brand.

The Cambridge Satchel Company is currently pursuing legal action against their manufacturing company. The Cambridge Satchel Co., had shared all their plans and designs with the manufacturing company whom then turned on the company and stole their product. The Cambridge Satchel Company decided to open its own manufacturing company in Britain to avoid this issue again in the future and provide more jobs in the country.

The stiff, handmade, genuine leather bag is simple and trendy. It smells strongly of leather and comes in black, brown and a variety of fluorescent colours; which started off as a request by a customer. The larger version of the two satchel bags is perfect for students who carry a 13" computer and a couple of notebooks. The front pockets are ideal for iPods, wallets, cell phones and a few other small items.
