Handbags through Golden History

By Nazmus Sakib

Everything has a history in this world, including the Handbags women sport on their arms with pride. Though no woman can dream of living without those rectangular fashion statements, not many bother to find out how their weapons for developing others' envy were created. If you are the inquisitive type and want to find out how your purse came into existence, then read on.

Pre-Historic History

Though many won't believe it, handbags go all the way back to 480 B.C. A painting from the aforementioned year showed African priests carry beaded bag. Besides, peasants in early rural societies had to own bags to carry the seeds they had to plough. However, historians are under the impression that they may date to a much earlier time because Man always required having something to carry his knickknacks. During those times, bags were knitted and decorated with feathers or shells. If a person had many shells on their pouches, that would mean that they lived by the sea.

The Medieval Age and Beyond

In the 15th century handbags were given from a groom to his bride, they were deemed precious. These bags were appropriate for the occasion with an embroidered love story. Bags were made very personal. Items that were needed for comfort or for hobby were contained in a person's bag. Handkerchiefs were kept scented in bags during the 16th century. Handkerchiefs were sweetened in purses that were scented with lavender.

The 18th Century Bag Revolution

Today's bags are most closely related to bags from the 18th century. Long-stringed reticules, or drawstring bags, were produced at this time. Women were able to hide their handkerchiefs, fans, dance cards, perfumes and even makeup in their bags. At this time, women's clothing became more fitted and pockets were becoming extinct, which meant handbag use increased.

The 19th Century till Today

Bags became even more famous during the Victorian Period. This is about the time that women began making different ones to go with their clothes. About the mid 1800s bags began to take a new form. Instead of drawstrings over the shoulder, Handbags were made with circular or square shapes to be held in the hand. Bags were decorated with beads and needlework to add to their elegance.

Today, bags come in conventional and unconventional shapes and sizes. Women choose heavily embroidered and beaded ones on occasions, but they will always have a few other bags to suit their daily routines.
